Night shots / star effect without filter

Posted by pbOOg.cOm at 06:00 PM in 2008

Maybe have you ever wondered how light sources are transformed into stars during the night
without using a “star” filter.

Example :

Goods station of Denges. Here, lamps are transformed into star with 6 branches (that depends on the lens used).

Here’s the technique with a reflex or any camera with a manual mode :

  1. Use a tripod and mount your camera on it
  2. Choose the smallest sensitivity (usually 100 or 200 ISO)
  3. Set the manual mode and choose the longest exposure time (usually 30 sec)
  4. Choose the opening as small as possible for this long exposure time (f/11 to f/22 usually)
  5. Shot ! (using the timer or a remote control is even better)
