A priest reads the Holy Scriptures in the Mikael Milhaizengi rock-hewn church.
Majority of people in Ethiopia speak Amharic, a language derived from Ge’ez. Ge’ez remained the learned language of Ethiopia until the nineteenth century. It’s now used only as a liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and only priests still speak that language.
But I don’t know if the above text is Amharic or Ge’ez.

One of Tigray’s most interesting features is a proliferation of rock-hewn churches, often difficult to reach. There would be more than 120.
We are here at Petros & Paulos with the priest, this church seems to be suspended in the middle of the cliff.
I found an interesting site that shows outside of the church in 360° :

Back to Ethiopia, after a great but hard journey in the Danakil, it’s time to take the road again through the “Historic route of the North“.

After the Afar region, we are here in the highlands to over 2000 m in the Tigray region, one of 9 regions of Ethiopia. The last major famine in the country (1984 – 1985) that killed 1 million people, has prevailed particularly in this region and in the south.
It’s harvest time… Here’s a scene of threshing (separating the wheat) with zebus.

For this new year, my blog have a new design. It is not a revolution but some modifications of cosmetic order. Any criticisms / suggestions are welcome !
I also send you my best wishes for 2010 !
Below, a photo of the rock of Vergisson taken since the rock of Solutré, in the Southern Burgundy. Between are the vineyard of appelations Pouilly-Fuissé and Mâcon-Vergisson (maybe it reminds you that you drank too much yesterday evening ?) and the village of Vergisson.
