The little town of Bati is known for its large and colorful Monday market, which attracts many different people – Afar, Oromo and Amharas – from all around. People walk sometimes more than five hours to get there.

Representing the apogee of the rock-hewn tradition, Bet Giyorgis is the most visually perfect church of Lalibela, a 12m-high three-tiered plinth in the shape of a Greek cross.

Priest at the door of Bet Abba Libanos, one of many rock-hewn churches of Lalibela.
Tradition says that this church was built in 24 hours by Meskal Kebran, wife of King Lalibela, helped by angels. It may explain the fragility of the sanctuary which is cut in a more friable rock. The walls of the facade are also dangerously cracked.
