Lake Tana with its approximately 80 km long and 70 km wide and an elevation of 1840 meters, is the largest lake in Ethiopia. The lake has a number of islands, whose numbers vary depending on the level of the lake. A geographer named 37 islands, of which he believed 19 have or had monasteries or churches on them.
The people of the lake use the papyrus growing along its banks to make the tankwa, the local boat. These canoes are made identically for thousands of years.
