Here ends the journey across the Danakil desert, the hottest and inhospitable on Earth.

We leave the Afar, this proud and free people, and their camels … It’s “goodbye” time.

The Ethiopian trip is far from over. After the heat in the Danakil, we will get some freshness in the Ethiopian highlands… See later on this blog !

Salt extraction on the lake Karum. The salt is loaded on camels (100-120 kg) and then transported on the Ethiopian highlands to be sold.

Breakdown on the lake

After visiting Dallol, it was necessary to cross again the lake in the opposite direction. But this time, in the middle of the lake, our vehicle stopped and didn’t want to restart. The 2nd vehicle pulled us to the village of Ahmed Ela. Without its help, we had to go back to the village by walk with a terrible heat.

Two strange sources on Lake Karum… Water comes from the depths of Earth and flows nowhere.

I am not sure, but the mountain in the background is perhaps the Erta Ale volcano.
