After sand and salt, we found water in the incredible desert.
The depth of this lake without life is not exceeding 20 cm.

North West direction, 10,000 km away and we are in Greenland

Seriously, we drive here on Lake Assal (or lake Karum) on a thick layer of salt.
This lake is located at 115m below the sea level.

Caravans of salt

Salt isn’t only exploited to Afdera, but also on the lake Assal (or lake Karum). But here, no trucks and “modern” tools to exploit the white gold. Salt is manually extracted and transported with camels up to the market of Mekele, 80 km farther, in 1 week.
